Real Madrid look to overturn their 2-1 defeat against Juventus in Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg at the Bernabeu.

It hasn’t been a great week for Real Madrid, with defeat in the first leg last week followed by a 2-2 draw at home to Valencia in La Liga on Saturday. Failure to beat Los Che has left Carlo Ancelotti’s side four points behind the league leaders Barcelona with just two games remaining.

The Champions League now seems the only realistic possibility of a trophy this season for Real. The Spanish side are attempting to become the first team in the modern era to successfully defend the title and they are confident of advancing despite losing the first leg in Turin

“Our reputation is on the line against Juve and the crowd will be spectacular and will be our 12th man,” Real defender Dani Carvajal said.

“We put in a shift for the full 90 minutes against Valencia. We ran, fought and, if you don’t put it in, it ends up taking its toll, but on Wednesday we’re going to go all out. The crowd got behind us and didn’t give in at any point.”

Real Madrid have been eliminated in their last three European Cup semi-finals against Italian sides. Juventus beat them in 2003, Torino in 1992 and AC Milan in 1989. That said, the Spanish side have won 21 of their 29 home games against Italian opponents and have only lost six times.

Juventus are in their first semi-final since 2003 and coach Massimiliano Allegri admits that he won’t know his starting line-up right until the last minute.

“We know it will be a very difficult game in Madrid and a different one entirely,” he said.

“A more attacking affair. We passed up four or five decent chances in the first leg. We’ll have to put them away at the Bernabeu if we want to go through.”

Juventus have had a great run this season and put on a strong performance in the first leg. Their home form has always been strong and they have not conceded a single goal in any of their last three away games in this competition.

However, Juve’s record in Spain is not too strong – winning on just three of their 21 trips and losing 14 times in the process.

This is their 11th semi-final appearance in the Champions League, winning seven of those two-legged ties.

Home advantage has proved key in past meetings between these two, with Real Madrid winning five of their seven games against Juventus in the Spanish capital. The hosts’ form at home this season has been excellent in general and they will fancy their chances of finding a couple of goals.
