European champions Real Madrid will continue their quest for a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals when they host Schalke on Tuesday.

Holding a 2-0 lead from the first leg of their last 16 tie, Madrid have managed 10 consecutive victories in Europe stretching back to their successful run to their 10th European Cup last season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men are chasing a record-equalling 12th straight home win in the tournament, although they will do so following their 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. The result means that bitter rivals Barcelona return to the top of La Liga having beaten Rayo Vallecano 6-1.

The defeat was Madrid’s fourth in 14 games this season with coach Carlo Ancelotti admitting that he had no explanation for why his star-studded strike force of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale has failed to perform lately.

“We have to fix the problems quickly,” the coach said.  It sounds strange to say that Real Madrid has attacking problems when we have scored so many goals this season, but it’s true.”

Schalke must hope that these unusual misfiring tendencies continue, having endured the Madrid forward line at its most brutal last season. Madrid beat the Bundesliga side 6-1 away in the 2013-14 last eight stage before closing out a 9-2 scoreline on aggregate.

The German side have moved up from eighth to fourth in the Bundesliga since former Chelsea boss Di Matteo took over in October and enjoyed a successful weekend, winning their first game in five with a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim.

“We head to Madrid in high spirits,” left-back Christian Fuchs said.

“No-one will be betting on us to turn it around but there’s a chance that it could happen.”

Madrid will be boosted by the return of influential midfielder Luka Modric who has been side-lined with a thigh injury since November, but captain Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez will miss out once more.

Schalke will be missing Kevin-Prince Boateng due to suspension.
