Roger Federer has breezed through Wimbledon to the quarterfinals this year where he meets Gilles Simon on Court 1 on Wednesday.
The Swiss number one is determined to bulk out his Wimbledon trophies by adding an eighth championship to his collection and, judging by his current form, he could well be on track to do so.
Seeded second at Wimbledon this year, Federer eased his way comfortably through his fourth round match on Monday as he knocked out Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets to book his place in the quarters.
The Spaniard was a refreshing change of pace for Federer having faced two big servers – Sam Querrey and Sam Groth – earlier on in the contest.
“It was nice to play a baseliner after two big servers,” he commented after his win against Bautista Agut.
“I did a nice job making the transition. Clearly I felt I had more time on the return, still was able to play aggressive tennis, committed on the return as well, which sometimes all of a sudden if you have time, you tend to just get it in a get the rally started.
“It was a good match. I got off to a good start and kept rolling. Obviously maybe Roberto wasn’t at his very best. Midway through the second, he hurt himself. Still, he was out there and he was actually still moving OK, so I had to put him away, which I was able to do so.”
The seven-time Wimbledon champion has only dropped one set in the competition so far this year, with seemingly no opponent able to break his serve. If Gilles Simon is to cause an upset in the quarters he’ll need to change that pattern.
“I look at my next round opponent – Gilles Simon is one of the best return players we have in the game,” Federer added. “I would think I’ll be tested a lot. So that streak’s maybe coming to an end, in my opinion.”
Simon, another baseline player, is unlike to pose much of a threat with his serves. However, the Frenchman will be playing to match Federer in rallies and overpower him on the bigger points. He’ll certainly have his work cut out for him on that front.
Seeded twelfth at this year’s Wimbledon, Simon will enter the quarterfinals boosted after his impressive 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tomas Berdych in the fourth round.
“We have never played on grass,” Simon revealed of his upcoming match against Federer. “I think he’s playing really good right now. He is in really good shape.
“I would just go there and try to play what I’m playing from the beginning of the tournament and from the beginning of the grass court season.
“I have often had some close matches with Roger. Still he destroyed me once, so I’m ready that it can be sometimes difficult to face him, but one more time I just feel good and I just want to play it.”
