Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka cross paths for the second time this season as the two Swiss stars go head to head in the quarter finals at Roland Garros on Tuesday.
Swiss tennis fans will be pleased to have the guarantee of a man in the semi-finals at the French Open, but it will certainly be a close tie between the fellow countrymen and Davis Cup teammates.
“It will be a special match,” said Federer, champion at Roland Garros in 2009. “It’s not a traditional match. There aren’t too many Swiss players in the draw. It’s always special to play each other.
“I hope I will reach the semi-final of a tournament,” continued Federer. “I will pull out all the stops to advance to the next round. If I will not make it, I will be very happy for Stan.”
Federer and Wawrinka face each other on Tuesday for the 19th time, with 17-times Grand Slam winner Federer victorious in 16 of their head-to-heads. Of the four times they have met at Grand Slam Tournaments, Wawrinka has failed to overcome the World No.2.
Wawrinka, however, can boast solid credentials on clay. The 2014 Australian champion fought his two wins over Federer on the surface, the most recent of which taking place just last year in the Monte Carlo Masters.
Federer won his quarter-final spot with a fourth round victory over Gael Monfils, 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-1. Play was interrupted due to inclement weather on Sunday night at one set apiece, but when they recommenced on Monday Federer dominated the remaining sets while his French opponent appeared to be battling a cold.
Wawrinka’s fourth round match against No.12 seed Gilles Simon took place without much difficulty for the Swiss.
“It was perfect,” said Wawrinka. “I’m really happy to have won the match. I was expecting a tough match. It’s never easy to play Gilles, especially in Grand Slams. I played really well, really aggressive.”

This will certainly be an entertaining game between Switzerland’s No.1 and No.2. Although Wawrinka is perhaps more comfortable on clay and sailed through the fourth round with ease, it is Federer that is the bookies’ favourite in this clash.
A more experienced Federer looks good to win 3 sets to 1, priced at 11/4 with Betway.
