Royal Ascot – Commonwealth Cup Betting Tips

Jake Cooper - 12 Oct 2016

2015 sees the first running of the Commonwealth Cup race. Trainers have warmly welcomed its addition to the Royal Ascot calendar as it offers a Group One opportunity for three-year-old sprinters, something which had previously been denied them unless they went in against older horses.

The race has long been the target for a number of horses including favourite Limato who is priced at 7/2 with Betway. He looked promising as a two-year-old and even better when reappearing to win a Group Three race over this course and distance in April. However, he suffered the first reverse of his career in last month’s Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock at the hands of Adaay (7/1).

The two are set to battle it out once more in the first running of this three-year-old only Group One, with bookmakers expecting Limato to gain revenge on his William Haggas-trained opponent.

The pair looks set to face a tough opposition. American raider Hootenanny won the Windsor Castle Stakes at this meeting last year for Wesley Ward and went on to land the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita. Hootenanny is expected to push Limato all the way with odds of 9/2.

A big contender is speedy Tiggy Wiggy who is at 11/2. She was the best two-year-old filly in Britain last year, finishing third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket recently. She is considered a favourite for the Commonwealth Cup as it will be a chance for her to revert back to her preferred sprinting.

Charlie Hills’ Muhaarar (12/1) won the Greenham Stakes at Newbury on his reappearance and has been pointed at this race by connections since a luckless run in the French 2000 Guineas.

Anthem Alexander got back into winning form recently when she landed the Group 3 Racing Post Lacken Stakes, almost a year after winning the 2014 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The daughter of Starspandgledbanner has odds of 7/1 and has finished behind Tiggy Wiggy on her two starts after Ascot last year as a juvenile, but made a perfect return to action.
