Chelsea remain undefeated this season as they head to Germany to play Schalke in another Group G Champions League clash on Tuesday.

Roberto Di Matteo will be greeted warmly by his old team as they travel to play the Schalke side he now manages. The Italian scored 26 goals for the English club in his playing career and took over as caretaker manager in March 2012 to guide Chelsea to Champions League and FA Cup victories.

Di Matteo became Schalke boss just last month and now has the chance to prove himself against his former club. A victory for Schalke on Tuesday will see them move to the top of Group G, but they have their work cut out for them in facing a formidable Chelsea side.

Chelsea’s impressive points tally in the Champions League so far this season means that a win or a draw with two goals will be enough to secure their progression to the last 16.

Schalke played impressively against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, ending the side’s six-game winning streak and will be hoping for a similar display against Chelsea.

“We played very well,” said Di Matteo. “We played confidently, didn’t let ourselves be intimidated and we’ve been working very hard in training these past two weeks, which helped us today.”

Chelsea will also be heading into their European fixture on a high having delighted manager Jose Mourinho with their 2-0 weekend victory against West Brom.

Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas both returned from minor groin and hamstring problems with Costa and Eden Hazard scoring the game’s only matches. Chelsea are now undefeated since April when they lost out to Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of last year’s Champions League.

Mourinho has requested that fans focus on the game rather than the relationship between the respective managers, commenting, “This is a match between Chelsea and Schalke and not Di Matteo and me.

“We need to get enough points in these last two matches to get through to the last 16. If we lose both matches we go into the Europa League. This team wants to be a very good one and so they want to play against the best teams in the best competition, so I would feel very frustrated if we have to go to the Europa League.”

The previous five times these clubs have met Chelsea have won 3 games and the other two have been draws.

Schalke have only managed one goal against the blues in all five meetings although this game in the first leg of Tuesday’s clash. A 1-1 result at Stamford Bridge could set Chelsea on the back foot as Schalke look to take control of their home game.
