Williams vs Sharapova | Thursday 9 July, 2015 | Wimbledon | 15.00 BST

Serena Williams takes up a familiar place on Centre Court on Thursday against old foe Maria Sharapova as they play for a place in the final of the Championships at Wimbledon.

The match marks no less than twenty matches between the two tennis greats, with Wimbledon’s number one seed the firm favourite to win.

However, despite losing their last 16 head-to-heads, Sharapova is playing well at Wimbledon this year and if Williams is not on her game then she’s certainly good enough to win.

Williams has not appeared unbeatable so far this Wimbledon and has been tested by several of her opponents which will give Sharapova a lot of material to review in terms of how to get one over on her old rival. Will she be able to finally claim a victory or does Williams have more in store?

Just as in the French Open, Williams has found it a struggle to overcome her opponents, fighting back to beat Heather Watson and Victoria Azarenka from shaky starts. However she did still manage to take the title at Roland Garros, so we know that the world number one has what it takes to battle through.

Sharapova won at Wimbledon back in 2004 when she defeated Williams in the final, but this year hasn’t been her best. She sailed through the early stages but took three sets to close out her quarterfinal against CoCo Vandeweghe.

On her head-to-head record with Williams, Sharapova commented, “I haven’t had great success against her. I would love to change that around. That’s how I look at it.”

Depiste being the favourite, Williams knows that the clash won’t be easy.

“It’s been a while but she’s been playing really well, she’s such a fighter,” Serena commented on her opponent. “I look forward to it. I don’t have anything to lose, I’m just going in there trying to win a match.”

Sharapova, on the other hand, will be trying to forget about the track record between the pair and go in with a positive mind-set.

“Despite that record and despite me being unsuccessful against her, I’m happy to be setting up chances to go out and face someone who has been dominating tennis for almost a year now. Her success has been incredible.”

It’s likely that the winner on Thursday will go on to win the competition in the final against Garbine Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded 20 and 13 respectively.
