Having defeated her older sister in her last match, Serena Williams looks increasingly dangerous as she heads into the quarterfinals to face her next opponent Victoria Azarenka.

After playing her sister and fellow Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, Serena now takes on another former world number one in Azarenka. Despite being seeded at number one, it is well documented that Serena Williams struggles with her nerves in the early stages of a Grand Slam, something which was evident in her third round clash against Heather Watson. However she looks to have finally hit her stride as she heads into the quarterfinals.

“I played solid,” Serena said after beating her sister 6-4 6-3. “I knew playing someone like Venus, who’s beaten me the most, I had to be solid. I had to cut down my unforced errors. I had to take chances and I was able to do that.”

Victoria Azarenka is one of only two women to have beaten Williams more than once since 2011. Although she trails 3-16 in a head-to-head comparison, Azarenka has proven herself a worthy opponent to the world number one.

After winning two of four games against Serena in 2013, a foot injury impeded the Belarusian throughout much of 2014 and her return to form this season has been slow.

Azarenka most recently came up against Williams in the third rounds of Madrid and the French Open, losing both times despite putting up a good fault.

In Madrid she served for the match and had three match points before losing 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-7(1). At the French Open an ill Serena Williams flagged in the first game before making a comeback to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Azarenka commented on the upcoming quarterfinal, “Close is not good enough.”

“I need to go out there and prove myself. To talk about it is pointless for me.”

Ultimately Williams is more confident than Azarenka ahead of the game and is feeling more comfortable as the competition progresses. With the clash with her sister now behind her Serena will surely come out firing and Azarenka, despite her best efforts, just won’t be able to match the world number one.
