Arsenal and Southampton are equal on points as they head into a critical New Year’s Day clash at St Mary’s. Can the Gunners continue moving up the table as the Saints’ campaign loses momentum?

Arsene Wenger’s men have won seven of their last nine matches across all competitions and look strong ahead of Thursday’s game, particularly as the Saints’ strong start to the season began to lose traction over the last month.

Although Ronald’s Koeman’s side may not be at their peak, they have managed to bounce back from a five match losing streak to win two of their last three games and draw 1-1 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

The Gunners beat Southampton at the Emirates when they last met less than a month ago, but their record at St Mary’s has been less impressive with the last three outings there resulting in draws.

Arsenal’s front line has been impressive this season, albeit for several injuries, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck and Santi Cazorla creating a formidable attacking line.

The Gunners defence however is much weaker and Koeman will be looking to exploit this. Wenger’s men may have scored at least twice in their last six fixtures but they have also been unable to keep a clean sheet.

Arsenal will be without Olivier Giroud through suspension after receiving a red card on Boxing Day, and Aaron Ramsey (hamsting), Mesut Ozil (knee) and Mikel Arteta (calf) remain out due to injury.

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin will also miss out after he was shown a red card in the draw against Chelsea on Sunday.

A strong Southampton performance at home could well be on the cards as the Saints push to keep their position in the top four.
