Southampton vs Liverpool | Sunday 22 February, 2015 | St Mary’s Stadium | 16.15
The last time Liverpool travelled to Southampton to take on the Saints they walked out 0-3 victors and the Reds will certainly be aiming for a repeat performance to add to their 9 game unbeaten run in the league.
Southampton have had an impressive year so far and could end up with a coveted Champions League finish to the season if they keep up their form.
The Saints need a victory on Sunday to remain in contention for a top four finish after a home loss to Swansea City and a draw to West Ham United saw them lose some ground at the top. With just a point now separating them from Arsenal below and Manchester United ahead, victory this weekend is critical.
Liverpool’s recent run is certainly worthy of a team in the top four but after a first half to the season plagued with defeat the Reds are playing catch up in seventh and can’t afford to lose against Ronald Koeman’s men on Sunday.
Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren will be heading back to face their former club for the first time since they moved to Liverpool last summer and will be looking to make an impact on their return to St Mary’s.
Graziano Pelle began the season as one of the top goalscorers but has been unable to find the back of the net since Southampton beat Everton in December. Pelle will need to find his former flair if the Saints are to remain in the top four for much longer.
Liverpool have been boosted by the return of Daniel Sturridge in recent games who was out for the majority of the season with injury problems.
With Steven Gerrard recovering from injury the pressure will fall to Sturridge and Raheem Sterling to find the net for the Reds.
Southampton vs Liverpool Betting Tips
There really isn’t much separating these two sides in terms of recent form. Southampton have the shorter odds but with Sturridge likely to start we’ll be backing a Liverpool victory at 9/5 with Paddy Power and Sturridge to find the net first, priced at 9/2 with Betway.
