Southampton host Man United at St Mary’s on Monday in the weekend’s most exciting Premier League clash.

With just one point separating these two sides in the table, both teams will be vying for the win in what looks to be a closely fought match.

The Saints have had a superb start to the season although their early momentum seems to have started to slow down as they struggled and lost their most recent clashes against Man City and Arsenal.

Ronald Koeman’s men will now need to prepare for a tough game against an in form United who have been regaining places in the table after a slow start to the season.

Koeman will be without Jack Cork, Morgan Schneiderlin and James Ward-Prowse due to injuries but has warned Louis Van Gaal not to expect an easy game at St Mary’s on Monday.

“They [United] are on the way back,” commented the Saints coach this week. “They have shown that in the performances of the team and have won the last four games, it’s a nice challenge for us.

“Normally, if Southampton play Manchester United, United are the favourites, but they know it will be a tough game. Our performance against Arsenal was a good one, much better than the City game, but in the Premier League there isn’t an easy game to win.”

Man United will be looking for their fifth consecutive Premier League victory on Monday and the three points that would see them leapfrog both Southampton and West Ham to third place in the league.

Captain Wayne Rooney will return for the match having missed the midweek game with Stoke due to a knee problem incurred against Hull.

Van Gaal is confident ahead of the clash despite Southampton’s impressive start to the season.

“It’s the same in every country,” said the United manager. “Every country always has at the beginning of the season a surprise.

“Zwolle in the Netherlands was leading the competition in the Dutch league for six or eight matches. It’s always like that.

“But as I have said, what always matters is the end of May. That counts. Now it’s not so important. They have a very good squad. I know a lot of Southampton’s players and a lot of players were offered to us.”
