Southampton vs Sunderland Betting Tips

Southampton might be third in the table right now and confident of winning on Saturday but it’s been over a decade since they last beat Sunderland. Can the Saints finally defeat the Black Cats this Saturday? Here are my thoughts on the game along with my famous betting tips.

Before the international break the Saints had a run of four wins finally ended by Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile Sunderland won their first game of the season against Stoke City thanks to Connor Wickham’s fourth-minute opening goal and Steven Fletcher’s brace.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet described the victory as a welcome boost to their campaign, particularly considering the Black Cats have only lost one game in seven matches.

Southampton were expected to struggle somewhat this season following the departure of former manager Maruicio Pochettino and several of the team’s key players over the summer. Despite this, the players have adapted quickly under Ronald Koeman and look set for another great season.

Koeman is without Jay Rodriguez, James Ward-Prowse, Maya Yoshida and Sam Gallacher on Saturday but on the whole his team returned unscathed from international duty.

Graziano Pelle scored his first goal for Italy to secure the win in Malta and will be starting for the Saints at the weekend.

Sunderland’s John O’Shea also stunned fans whilst playing for Ireland in the week, scoring a 94th-minute equaliser against Germany.

With O’Shea and Santiago Vergini starting in defence, Poyet is likely to keep the line-up much the same as two weeks ago. The only change will be replacing Jordi Gomez in midfield with Jack Rodwell.

Southampton vs Sunderland Betting Tips

With Sunderland unbeaten in eight games against Southampton, and with Southampton unbeaten in five home games, this looks set to be a very exciting match.

I’ll be betting on a Southampton 2-1 victory, offered at William Hill at 15/2.

Granziano Pelle is a safe bet to score at 17/20 at Betway, but if you want to take more of a risk Steven Fletcher has much better odds at 16/5 at Paddy Power.
