Stoke City vs Liverpool | Sunday 24 May, 2015 | Britannia Stadium | 15.00

Stoke will host Liverpool on Sunday in their last Premier League game of the season as the Reds fight to hold onto a European spot.

Manager Mark Hughes has done an impressive job at the Britannia Stadium and earned Stoke City a place in the top half of the table, finishing the season in ninth whatever the outcome on Sunday.

After replacing Tony Pulis in 2013, many suggested that Hughes would struggle but the Stoke boss proved his critics wrong, earning a ninth-place finish last season, and it has been a similar story for the Potters this year.

The side have avoided defeat in all but two of their last ten away games and, although they can’t improve on these results on the final day, they will fancy their chances of winning against one of the biggest names in English football.

A 1-3 defeat to Crystal Palace last time out wasn’t exactly the perfect Anfield send-off for Steven Gerrard, who will make his final appearance for the club on Sunday. The Liverpool captain will now be desperate to go out on a high and get the three points against Stoke.

Liverpool’s season has petered out towards the end, with the Reds losing crucial fixtures to Manchester United, Arsenal and Hull city.

They have managed only a single win from their last six games in all competitions and are still fighting for the fifth place. Tottenham Hotspurs are just one point behind them and Southampton just one point further, both threatening Liverpool’s chances of a European spot next season.

Manager Brendan Rogers has a tough task on his hands to bridge the gap between Liverpool and the top four next season and he acknowledges that Liverpool’s poor display emphasised the scale of the building work he has in front of him this summer.

“There is a big job to be done in the summer,” he said.  “There are areas that we need to improve on a lot if we are going to push on, but that is something we will assess. It’s not the time for it now, but certainly over the course of the summer we have work to do.”

Mark Hughes has kept his team focused in this last stretch of the season and playing at home will further motivate Stoke to end the campaign on a high note. However, Liverpool will be desperate to give captain Steven Gerrard the send-off he deserves after the disappointing performance last weekend.

We believe that the Reds will give it their all and come away with the three points on Sunday.

We’ll be putting our money on a 1-2 Liverpool victory priced at 8/1 with Paddy Power with Raheem Sterling to score first priced at 11/2 with Betway.
