Stoke City vs Southampton | Wednesday 29 October, 2014 | Britannia Stadium | Kick off 19.45
Stoke City and Southampton played in the Premier League just a few days ago with Saints scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. Stoke now have a chance to gain revenge for that loss as the two teams go head to head again in the League Cup this Wednesday.
Southampton were playing at home at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday where Sadio Mane was the only player to find the net. On Wednesday the Saints will travel to the Britannia Stadium, offering Mark Hughes’ men a chance at redemption.
In last year’s League Cup Southampton were knocked out in the corresponding round of the competition, but Stoke continued, reaching the quarter finals where they lost out to Manchester United.
Hughes, whose side has already defeated Portsmouth and Sunderland to reach this point, is eager to go even further this year commenting, “We’ll look to go strong. We want to progress. It’s a competition we talked about a lot at the beginning of the season and if you look at the teams I’ve picked it shows I’ve given it the respect it deserves.
“So we’ll be strong again. We may have to make changes because there were a few bumps and bruises at the weekend. I’ve got other guys that are chomping at the bit to be a part of what we’re trying to do this year… so we’ll have to look to see if we can give them an opportunity to impress on Wednesday.”
While Stoke’s season has been one of mixed success, Southampton will be looking to continue what has been a triumphant season for them so far.
The Saints currently occupy second place in the Premier League table and new boss Koeman has been able to unite a team that lost several of its top flight players over the summer transfer window.
Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin gave some insight into the side’s thoughts ahead of the game.
It’s strange to play them again so quickly,” the midfielder told the club’s website. “But it’s a different competition, it’s a cup game and it’s different.
“I don’t know if they will make some changes, I don’t know if we will too. But we know what to expect. We saw it in the second half and we need to expect that for the whole game on Wednesday. It’s never an easy place to go but I’m sure we will be ready.”
Stoke’s Charlie Adam may be absent from the clash after picking up a calf injury at the weekend, but otherwise neither side have any fresh injury concerns to deal with.
