Sunderland vs Liverpool | Saturday 10 January, 2015 | Stadium of Light | 12.45
Sunderland will be looking to put an end to their three-game winless League run when they host Liverpool at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
The Black Cats have lost to both Hull and Manchester City in recent weeks but will be hoping that their FA Cup third round victory against Leeds United will give them some winning momentum.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have been playing consistently well over the festive period having not lost a game in over five games across all competitions. The Reds will need to keep that momentum going this season if they’re to fight their way back into a top-four spot, but it certainly remains a possibility.
Looking at the head-to-head record Liverpool are clearly the dominant team in this clash, having beaten Sunderland twice and drawn once in their last four meetings.
The last time Sunderland were victorious over the Reds came nearly three years ago when a goal from Nicklas Bendtner secured a 1-0 win.
Steven Gerrard has been the focus of a lot of attention in the last week having announced his departure from Liverpool for LA Galaxy at the end of the season.
The Liverpool captain has proven lately just what the Merseysiders will be losing when he goes, having scored the club’s last four goals, securing a draw against Leicester in the League and taking them through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a brace against AFC Wimbledon.
Mario Balotelli will be keen to get on the scoresheet at Sunderland as he’s yet to really make his mark at the club and Brendan Rodgers will also have Raheem Sterling back, having rested him for the FA Cup tie.
Sunderland’s Adam Johnson will be hoping to cause problems for Liverpool’s defence as the in-form striker has scored three times in the last three weeks, including the winning goal against Newcastle in the derby.
Sunderland vs Liverpool Betting Tips
Liverpool are the safer bet in this clash but Sunderland will give them a run for their money, so a good bet would be a Liverpool victory with both teams to score, priced at 11/4 at Betway.
We’ll be expecting another goal from Gerrard as he continues to prove he’s not past it yet, at 23/10 with Paddy Power.
