England vs Australia | First Series 8-12 July, 2015 | Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
The Ashes series gets underway between England and Australia this week, with the first test match beginning on Wednesday 8 June in Cardiff.
The last series saw Australia take out England in a 5-0 whitewash down under which the home side will be hoping to rectify over the next few weeks. The Aussies have gone 15 years without a win on English soil and will be looking to put an end to England’s recent successes in the ODIs.
There certainly is some cause for optimism for England despite a rocky start to 2015. The sensational 3-2 ODI series win over New Zealand and the impressive form showed by younger players including Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid show that England could well be entering a new era.
England are now showing a level of confidence and excitement in their game and the fans are certainly getting behind them.
The real question is, though, can they continue in the Ashes with the same drive and determination they displayed through the ODI and T20 wins over New Zealand?
Australia head into the Ashes as the current holders but the aging squad have faced some criticism in recent months. Former fast bowler Jason Gillespie even labelled them “Dad’s army” since Chris Rogers and Brad Haddin are both 37.
The Aussies have also had some bad news recently with the exit of fast bowler Ryan Harris, retiring at 35 due to injury. In the past Harris has cause problems for England, taking 57 wickets at 20.63 on average over 12 Ashes tests.
If England can take advantage of the boost they’ll get in Harris’ absence then they stand a strong chance of dominating the series.
Despite England’s recent impressive form, Australia remain the favourites to retain the Ashes. Their ODI side won the World Cup earlier on in the year and the test team sit at second in the ICC rankings.
England also failed to beat both New Zealand and the West Indies in test series this year.
