Tottenham Hotspur take on Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in a game that could see them secure their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Partizan have already guaranteed their exit from the competition after the group stage having lost three and drawn one of their fixtures so far. Tottenham on the other hand have won two and drawn two and sit in joint first place in the group with Besiktas.

Tottenham and Partizan met in their first match of the competition in September but both failed to find the net, resulting in a goalless draw, but since then Spurs’ fortunes have improved while Partizan’s have been somewhat bleaker.

The North London club is riding high from back-to-back victories against Asteras Tripolis in which rising star Harry Kane scored an impressive give goals overall.

Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to secure their progression to the next stage on Thursday to take the pressure off the team in their far more challenging away trip to Besiktas.

Partizan have had a disappointing run in Europe this season with Sasa Markovic scoring the side’s only goal in the competition last time out. They have in fact failed to win a game at European level in over 5 years, having drawn four group stage games and lost 12.

Boss Marko Nikolic will be without midfielder Darko Brasanac through illness while Pochettino is unable to play defender Federico Fazio due to suspension.

The Tottenham boss will be pleased to welcome back goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who returns after serving his own match ban.

Pochettino has been using the European competition as a chance to give opportunities to his more junior squad members and has been rewarded with performances like that of Kane.

Left-back Ben Davies made his debut for Spurs on Sunday against Hull City and looks set to play again at White Hart Lane on Thursday, hoping to prove himself.

“It’s important for me,” he said. “I’ve waited a while and I’m delighted to have got there. Hopefully it’s the first of many. I want to kick on from here.”
