Tottenham’s performance over the past few weeks has been inconsistent so they’ll need a win against Group C leaders Asteras Tripolis to get their campaign back on track.
Spurs’ Premier League season has been decidedly mixed and added to their two draws so far in Europe, there is evidence that they’re lacking any real flair this year. Their opening two matches in Europe have left them in third position in the group with a mountain to climb.
Before the international break it seemed as though things were looking up for Mauricio Pochettino’s side having beaten Southampton 1-0 at White Hart Lane. However they slipped to a substantial defeat at the weekend losing 4-1 away to Man City suggesting that the team has yet to turn a corner.
“We’ve got a massive game now on Thursday and then Newcastle at the Lane next Sunday,” said midfielder Ryan Mason. “Hopefully we’ll put things right.”
Spurs striker Roberto Soldado scored in the cup game against Forest last month but failed to find the net from the penalty spot against City at the weekend.
“We are producing some good performances and we need to keep this going,” insisted Soldado. “I am working hard and I think the goals are coming soon.”
Despite appearing one of the weakest teams in the competition, Asteras are not to be underestimated. They currently sit at the top of Group C having convincingly beaten Partizan 2-0 in their last game making them the only side in the group to have won a match so far.
The Greek side had 22 shots on target against Partizan, despite conceding much of the possession, showing that they are exceptionally adept at playing on the break.
Asteras’ line-up features an all-Argentine attack including Facundo Parra, Pablo Mazza and Jeronimo Barrales. Tottenham’s defence will be kept on their toes with Barrales in particular operating as an aggressive main striker and Mazza and Parra offering strong support.
Tottenham are favourites to win but Asteras will give them a good run for their money while Emmanuel Adebayor is most likely to score at White Hart Lane.
