Sheffield will be looking to cause another League Cup upset when they head to Tottenham on Wednesday after beating Premier League side Southampton to book their place in the semi-final.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is looking to change his side around ahead of the first leg of this League Cup semi-final clash but he may live to regret that decision given Sheffield United’s history for giant-killing.

Sheffield are struggling to climb out of League One but head to White Hart Lane boosted by a series of impressive cup results under boss Nigel Clough.

Clough himself has won two League Cup titles as a player with Nottingham Forest and has masterminded several of Sheffield’s victories against top-flight opposition.

Last season United reached the FA Cup semi-finals after beating Villa and Fulham (then a Premier League side) along the way and have already eliminated QPR in the FA Cup as well as West Ham and Southampton in the League Cup.

Although Pochettino is keen to been Sheffield, his priority remains getting Spurs a top four finish in the Premier League and he has hinted that he could make some big changes to the side that beat Sunderland 2-1 at the weekend.

“We need to keep the players fit and need to be smart in how we manage the squad,” he said. “That was our 35th game and our schedule ahead is busy. We need to give the opportunity to all the players to be fit and fresh.”

It could also be that the Tottenham boss is looking to rest the likes of Harry Kane ahead of the upcoming Premier League clashes with arch-rivals Arsenal on February 7 followed by Liverpool three days later.

Emmanuel Adebayor could well be handed a start over Kane both to give the top striker a rest and to help the fringe player maintain his fitness after returning from compassionate leave.

If Sheffield are to add Tottenham to their list of giant-killings it will mean an end to Spurs’ run of nine unbeaten home games. The League One side may have their work cut out for them but they’ll certainly be pulling out all the stops at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.

Tottenham vs Sheffield Betting Tips

Sheffield are a tough side but we don’t’ think they’ll be able to do enough to beat Spurs at White Hart Lane. A 2-1 victory for the hosts looks most likely at 15/2 with William Hill.

We’ll be backing Christian Eriksen to score first at 5/1 and Erik Lamela to score at some point during the 90 minutes at 7/4, both with Betway.
