Wenger Confirms United Bid for Vermaelen

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is hot property right now, with Wenger negotiating bids for the Belgian from both Barcelona and Manchester United.

Barcelona reps are currently in London with the plant to thrash out a deal for Thomas Vermaelen as quickly as possible, but Wenger has now confirmed that United have also lodged a formal bid for the 28-year-old.

At the moment it looks more likely that Arsenal will accept a bid from Barcelona, as to sell Vermaelen abroad would be far preferable than seeing him play for their rivals.

United, however, believe the player will request to stay in the Premier League. There’s precedent for Arsenal to accept such a request, as Van Persie similarly asked to move to Man United over Barcelona when the two teams fought over him in 2012.

Vermaelen, in the final year of his contract with Arsenal, is expected to leave, particularly as he’s struggled with a small hamstring injury and played just 14 times in the Premier League last year.

Barcelona’s bid for Vermaelen is reported to be around £10 million, whilst United are said to be offering £15 million; Wenger has yet to confirm if any offers have been accepted.

The longstanding manager did comment briefly on the situation, cryptically stating, “Vermaelen could leave us because he needs to play now. We’re in a position where it’s difficult to stand in his way. We would prefer to sell him abroad. That is an option. We have offers from abroad as well. We have bids. You will know very soon.”

Arsenal’s options for replacing Vermaelen include Calum Chambers, signed for £16 million from Southampton.

At just 19 the right-back impressed last year in his first Premier League season and Wenger believes he can make a real impact to the Arsenal defence.

“I believe he is good value for money. He is 19 and a promising talent.”

Arsenal also remains interested in Manchester City’s Matija Nastasic and are contemplating a £15 million bid to secure the player.
