Everton are in high spirits as they head into their crucial Europa League Group H clash at Wolfsburg on Thursday.

The Toffees can secure their place in the knockout stage of the competition simply by avoiding defeat, while a win at the Volkswagen Arena will see them top the group.

Roberto Martinez’ men came out 4-1 on top in the first leg of this clash at Goodison Park in September, but drew in their trips to Krasnodar and Lille.

Defender Sylvain Distin described the team as riding high after their 2-1 victory against West Ham United in the Premier League at the weekend, a result which extended their unbeaten run to seven games across all competitions.

“We’re full of confidence at the moment,” he said. “We always have been, to be honest.

“Even if things were a bit difficult at the beginning of the season, we were aware of our qualities and knew that things were going to get back on track.

“At the moment, things are going well but it’s going to be a tough game. Wolfsburg are a really, really good team and I’m sure after the game we had here they’re going to try to reverse that.”

Wolfsburg will have their work cut out for them by Everton’s star striker Romelu Lukaku who joined the side from Chelsea in July. The 21-year-old has scored in three out of seven of his previous club games as well as netting goals for Belgium.

Everton will be missing Antolin Alcaraz and John Stones through injuries while Leighton Baines, Aiden McGeaft, Steven Naismith, Steve Pienaar and Darron Gibson are all doubtful to make an appearance in Germany.

Wolfsburg’s impressive streak of eight consecutive victories across all competitions was ended at the weekend when they lost 3-2 to Schalke in the Bundesliga but they remain second in the table behind Bayern Munich.

Wolfsburg’s Nicklas Bendtner could be the main threat to Everton’s chances having scored a brace against Krasnodar as well as another double for Denmark in a recent Euro qualifier against Serbia.

The German side will be without Joshua Guilavogui, Ricardo Rodriguez and Vierinhna.
