England need to win their crucial World Cup game against Colombia on Wednesday to be certain of progressing to the last 16.

Colombia produced one of the biggest shocks in Women’s Wold Cup history when they beat France 2-0 on Saturday. France, ranked third in the world, beat England in their opener and are among the favourites to win the tournament.

It was the first-ever World Cup win for Colombia, who now find themselves atop Group F and ready to advance to the knockout stage.

“My team are very ambitious and they showed that again today against France,” Colombia coach Fabian Taborda said after the match.

“We’ve proved that we’re not just here to make up the numbers.”

Mark Sampson’s squad have a place in the last 16 within their grasp after bouncing back from a narrow loss to France by registering a 2-1 win over Mexico on Saturday.

The Lionesses are now second in Group F, just a point behind Colombia. The top two in each of the six groups are guaranteed to progress to the knockout stages, while the four best third-placed teams will also advance.

Sampson said: “We still have areas to improve but we have laid some good foundations – defensively against France and how we attacked against Mexico.

“Now it’s about bringing all those good aspects together and taking that to Colombia.”

England destroyed their competition in a near-perfect World Cup qualifying campaign, conceding just once, winning all 10 matches and only needing nine matches to punch their ticket to Canada.

However, they know that Colombia will be a tough test and striker Karen Carney expects the South-American side to kick and foul when the two meet on Wednesday.

“They are a typical South American team,” said Carney, who scored in England’s 2-1 win over Mexico.

“They will be flamboyant, they will be in your faces, they will kick and foul you, they will break up play and frustrate you. That’s their game plan.”

Wednesday’s match is bound to be tough with England fighting for a spot in the top 16. The Colombians are sure to dig in and frustrate the Lionesses and their aggressive play may be too much for them to handle.

However, England have been consistent and in brilliant form throughout their qualifying campaign and have what it takes to win the match, securing their spot in the final 16.
