Germany and France face off on Friday in a quarterfinal between arguably the two best sides in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

World number ones Germany dominated yet again in their last 16 clash against Sweden, sending them home after a 4-1 thrashing. With eight goals in the last two matches, the German’s aggressive form of play has been working for them.

Forwards Anja Mittag and Celia Sasic now have five goals each in the competition, both scoring hat tricks against Ivory Coast in the group stage.

Germany have been just as impressive in defence, letting in just two goals in the whole tournament so far.

France, ranked third in the world, are beginning to hit their stride in the competition and looked strong in their 3-0 win over South Korea. Marie Laure Delie and Elodie Thomis took France into an early lead with both women scoring within the first 9 minutes.

Despite a shock defeat at the hands of Colombia in the group stages, Phillippe Bergeroo’s team have now scored eight unanswered goals in their last two games.

Defensively, too, France have looked stronger since the loss to Colombia, allowing just four shots on target.

The clash between Germany and France will be one of the most highly anticipated in the tournament. Germany, as always, will rely on their overpowering attack to control the pace of the match.

France may be the underdogs in this clash but they’ve been building momentum and could be the side to upset the competition favourites. If they manage to defeat Die Nationalelf, the French will become virtually unstoppable in Canada as they battle for the top spot.
