Germany take on the USA in the Women’s World Cup with a place in the final at stake in Montreal on Tuesday.

America and Germany are the two most successful teams in Women’s World Cup history, with two tournament wins each, and all eyes will be on them as they battle it out for a chance at a third title.

Only four countries have ever won the World Cup. The Americans lifted two of the first three tournaments, but have not been world champions since 1999.

Germany have won two of the last three, although Japan are the current champions, after beating the US on penalties in Germany four years ago.

After losing in the quarter-finals at the 2011 World Cup staged on home soil, Germany have played like a team on a mission in Canada. They enter the game boasting a tournament-best 20 goals after easing through the group phase before a convincing win over Sweden in the round of 16 and a penalty shootout win over France in the quarters.

The Americans, who lost the 2011 final to Japan, have also had a great run in the tournament, emerging from a group that included three top-10 ranked teams and have since picked up momentum with knockout wins over Colombia and China.

United States keeper Hope Solo thinks Germany could be tired in Tuesday night’s semi-final after needing penalties to beat France.

“They’re going to either hit us with a wake-up call that they needed or they’re going to be tired,” Solo said. “We’re peaking at the right time.”

However, USA coach Jill Ellis was complimentary of her side’s opponents and is anticipating an intriguing match-up on Tuesday.

“We’re thrilled to be in the semi-finals and playing a tremendous opponent in Germany, which we haven’t faced in, I think, a couple of years,” Ellis said.

“Obviously they are a terrific team and I think it’s going to be a fantastic match. We’re two great teams worthy of a semi-final match up.”

Bayern Munich and Germany full-back Leonie Maier is expecting another tough match but sees it as a rather different hurdle to overcome.

“These are two good teams who never give anything away, and it’s going to be a really tough match,” she said.

“USA are physically and mentally stronger than France, who played a more eye-catching brand of football.”

Women’s World Cup USA vs Germany Betting Tips

This will be a tightly fought encounter, with the two most successful teams in Women’s World Cup history fighting for a spot in the final. However, on the evidence of this tournament, it is Germany that have the advantage. In contrast to most America’s opponents, the Germans not only have a high level of technical skill, but also the physical components to handle the traditional strengths of the U.S.

Providing that they recover from their gruelling encounter with France, Germany should edge through to the final, priced at 6/4 with Betway.
