2019 European Games
About the European Games
The 2019 European Games will be the second edition of the prestigious event. Prior to 2015, every continent except for Europe had their own Olympic style continental games. In 2012, the European Olympic Committee brought forward the idea of creating a European equivalent that would be held every four years. The idea was approved, and the first games were held in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2015.
In the first European Games, 50 nations competed in 253 events across 20 sports. This year, the number of sports has been reduced to 15, with a total of 199 events. Ten of the sports will offer qualification opportunities for athletes hoping to compete in the 2020 summer Olympics.
