The 2018 Portugal Masters Golf Tournament

Jake Cooper - 21 Aug 2018

In the world of professional golf the European Tour includes some of the largest and most prestigious tournaments in the world. One of the most recent to be added to the tour is the Portugal Masters. While the majority of PGA tournaments got their start in the early 1940’s the Portugal Masters was first played in October 2007, but has since become both a player and spectator favourite. For sports betting enthusiasts, it also offers the perfect opportunity to bet on some of the best players in the world.

History of the Event

In its inaugural year, the Portugal Masters offered a total prize money of €3 million, making it the richest tournament in Portugal at the time. Since 2013, the prize money has dropped to €2 million, although it still ranks as one of the highest on the Tour.

The venue for the Portugal Masters is the ever-popular Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course located in Vilamoura. Opened in 2004, the course was designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer with plenty of bunkers, breath taking water features and long stretches fairway leading to small sharp greens.

The signature hole is the magnificent 17th, locally known as the Cascatas Victoria (Victoria Falls). The name stems from the fact that it houses 12 waterfalls inside the lakes that run along the right-hand side of the fairway. The 17th hole is a par 5 and a total of 539 meters. This makes it the longest hole on the course and it has the smallest green with a large body of water just to the right.
