UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals

Jake Cooper - 26 Feb 2018

The UEFA Champions League is one of the most exciting football tournaments in the world. With the first round of the last 16 completed, we have an idea of which teams are headed for the quarterfinals on the 3rd and 4th of April. While the 5 Premier League clubs hold the hopes of many a British football fan, we have to consider what could happen in the second round of the last 16.

Real Madrid Likely to Advance

The action begins on the 6th of March with PSG taking on Real Madrid. In their first matchup, Real Madrid dominated the French and went 3-1 up in aggregate. While they are playing at home, PSG need to outscore the Spaniards by 2 goals to advance, and 3 if Madrid score, a feat not many predict will happen.

Next up is Liverpool taking on Porto. There is not much we can say here. With a 5-0 aggregate, it looks to be an impossible task for Porto. Unless something goes extremely wrong, Liverpool should sail through to the quarterfinals.

Tottenham May Just Have the Edge

On the 7th of March, Tottenham take on Juventus. The first match ended in a 2-all draw. Considering Tottenham will be hosting this time around, they may just have the edge. However, we cannot discount the sheer brilliance of Higuain and Dybala.

Also on the 7th of March, we will see Manchester City taking on FC Basel. Again, this is a huge ask for Basel as they need to outscore Man City by 5 goals if they want to advance to the quarterfinals. The way Man City is playing at the moment this could be difficult, to say the least.

On the 13th of March, Roma take on Shakhtar Donestsk. While we have not had any action to predict as of yet, we have to remember that Roma were the team that finished ahead of Chelsea. They are a dangerous side and in all likelihood, will advance.

Man United a Likely Qualifier

Manchester United is also in action on the 13th when they take on Sevilla. Again, we are waiting on an aggregate here, but United finished top of their group while Sevilla finished runners up. Unless something goes horribly wrong, we can be fairly confident of another Premier League side going through.

The final 2 matchups kick off on the 14th of March. Besiktas take on Bayern and Chelsea take on Barcelona. Both matches ended in a draw in the first round, so it should be interesting to see what happens next. The quarterfinal draw will take place on the Friday the 16th of March. None of the teams will be seeded and clubs from the same association can be drawn against each other.
